Ford Uses Acoustic Mirrors To Cancel Out Road Noise

Before radar was invented, Great Brittan built large acoustic mirrors which measure about 15.5 feet high and 14 feet wide.  They look like huge cement satellites and helped during WW II to identify the loud noise of an incoming invasion, warning inhabitants of the area sooner.

Now, with innovative technology, car manufacturers can use a modified version of the acoustic mirror to produce vehicles with little cabin noise.  Ford has been using this technology as they build their new Escape, helping to reduce noise for the driver and passengers.

The satellite-esque mirror has a microphone at the foci which measures surface noise and airflow.  The mirror will then find the areas at which sound is penetrating into the Escape and engineers will find a way to fix those areas.

Ford Escape engineers will have designed an optimally shaped exterior for aerodynamic noise reduction.  The brand new Escape should be a truly quiet ride.
