All-New Ford Police Interceptors: Performance And Fuel Economy

Ford’s all-new Police Interceptor sedan is specially designed to meet the needs of law enforcement. It’s roomy, rugged, and offers strong performance thanks to a potent 280 horsepower engine under the hood. But what will really sway consumers is the fact that these new Police Intercepts could save America’s law enforcement agencies millions of dollars a year on fuel costs. The Blue Oval’s latest Police Interceptor, which is taking over for the today’s Crown Victoria police car, will deliver at least 20 percent higher fuel economy, which is expected to dramatically reduce fuel costs for cities. For example, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department alone – the largest sheriff’s department in the world – operates a fleet of 6,200 vehicles that patrol an area the size of Connecticut . Last year, those vehicles drove a staggering 27 million miles. A fleet-wide 20 percent fuel economy gain would save the department at least $20 million per year, based on today’s fuel prices of nearly $4 per gallon. Ford’s goal of becoming a leader in fuel economy isn’t just reserved for its line of passenger cars. The new Police Interceptors were also designed with fuel economy in mind. Police Interceptors will be available with either a 3.5-liter Duratec V6 engine producing at least 280 horsepower or a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 producing at least 300 horsepower. “We set out to deliver our new portfolio of Police Interceptors to be industry-leading from durability to performance, including taking on one of the most important challenges for agencies today, fuel efficiency,” said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford’s North American Fleet Operations. “With Ford’s new Police Interceptors, we took the industry benchmark, our Crown Victoria, and improved every element including delivering up to a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy.” Deliveries of these vehicles will begin in early 2012.

2011 Mustang GT, Explorer Named To “Best New Model” List

The team at Kiplinger’s Personal Finance knows a thing or two about good investments, and that includes how to make sure you get your money’s worth when investing in a new vehicle. For proof, just consider that the publication named two Ford vehicles—the dynamic Mustang GT and the completely redesigned Explorer—to its rankings of “Best New Models” for 2011. Kiplinger’s noted a number of different reasons for the decisions. With the Mustang GT, the publication called out its high resale value, relatively low service and insurance costs, and overall modest price; in picking the Explorer , the SUV’s safety record and rigid new unibody construction won praise. But interestingly, there was one particular common advantage that stood out with both vehicles: High-performance, high-efficiency powerplants. This includes a brand-new 5.0-liter all-aluminum V8 for the 2011 Mustang GT, giving the modern-day muscle car a robust combination of performance and fuel economy. That comes courtesy of Ford engine technologies like sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection, twin independent variable valve camshaft timing and high-energy coil-on-plug spark plugs, delivering a bottom line of 412 hp, 390 hp and 26 mpg on the highway. Standard on the new Explorer is an advanced 3.5-liter V6, but the engine’s performance is anything but “standard.” Instead, it helps Ford’s popular SUV achieve a best-in-class EPA rating of 25 mpg highway—a 25 percent increase over its 2010 results—yet still tow up to 5,000 lbs. when properly equipped. In addition, the Explorer soon will be available with one of the automaker’s groundbreaking EcoBoost I4 engines, which is expected to improve fuel economy even further. Both the 2011 Mustang and Explorer are on sale at local Ford dealerships now.

Ford Engines Get Smaller As MPG Grows

Ford engineers have been creating a new generation of engines that utilize advanced technology. As a result, engines are becoming smaller, more fuel-efficient, yet they’re more powerful than ever before. As fuel-efficiency and emissions become a major concern world-wide, all automakers are working to transform automobile engines, without boosting costs. Ford is leading the way with its EcoBoost engine , featuring twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) and direct injection to maximize efficiency and power. “From Fiesta to Super Duty, Ford has invested a record amount in new engines, transmissions and cutting-edge technologies to meet our commitment to lead or be among the leaders in fuel economy in every segment in which we compete,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of powertrain engineering. New Ford and Lincoln models not only produce more horsepower per liter, but they are also offering class-leading fuel economy. Four vehicles carry an EPA-certified rating of 40 mpg or higher — an industry best. Even the rugged Ford F-Series pickup has benefitted from this new generation of smaller engines. “Most everyone who has driven the EcoBoost F-150 has been converted,” explains Jim Mazuchowski, Ford V6 engine manager. “Once our customers move past the idea of ‘only’ having six cylinders, and begin to think of our EcoBoost V6 as a gas-powered engine with diesel-type capability and characteristics, the excitement begins to build. Twin turbochargers and direct injection give the EcoBoost F-150 the broad, flat torque curve that makes towing with a diesel so effortless – and hard acceleration so much fun.”

Ford Focus Electric Goes Wireless With AT&T
