Ford Fusion Named Best Affordable Family Car

For anyone considering an affordable midsize car, U.S. News & World Report suggests the 2011 Ford Fusion. In a recent comparison of 19 vehicles, the Fusion came out on top for its family-friendly qualities, including its impeccable safety and reliability. Last year, the Fusion received a mid-life refresh to to help it standout from the competition. Although the Fusion is largely unchanged for the 2011 model year, it does feature attractive new features such as Integrated Blind Spot Mirrors and HD Radio. The interior is otherwise well-engineered and well-appointed. Families will especially appreciate two exciting technologies on the Fusion — MyKey and SYNC. MyKey comes standard on the Fusion, and it keeps young people safe by limiting their top speed to 80 mph, limiting radio volume to 45 percent, chiming continuously when seat belts aren’t buckled and providing low-fuel warnings. SYNC is Ford’s award-winning infotainment system that allows drivers to control smart phone apps and mp3 players through voice commands. Interestingly, U.S. News & World Report is just one of many publications to recently sing the Fusion’s praises: ” The Fusion is much improved from bumper to bumper, and it’s better prepared than ever to meet the high expectations of mid-sized sedan buyers.” — Car and Driver “Before you write off the 2010 Fusion as a warmed-over version of the previous model, we suggest you take one for a test-drive. The old Fusion was already a pretty good midsize sedan, and thanks to Ford’s determination to rectify its flaws, the new one’s even better.” — Edmunds “For a reasonable price you can pick up a decently equipped, nicely sized, attractive sedan that can accommodate a family of four in comfort, yet still be fun to drive.” — Autoblog “Regardless of which model suits your fancy, Ford’s midsize sedan offers a depth and breadth of trim levels, powertrains, and features that few rivals can match.” — Consumer Guide “Although much of the basic platform engineering on this front-drive/all-wheel drive four-door remains shared with its former Mazda stable mate, the MAZDA6, both its exterior and interior have be transformed to reflect a more youthful and contemporary flavor.” — Kelley Blue Book Many car reviewers and journalists agree that the Ford Fusion is a great vehicle for small families. If you’re looking for a vehicle that’s got good looks, offers safety and strong fuel economy, and won’t break the bank, the Fusion is worth a look.

Five Fords Named Among MT’s “Most Wanted American Cars”

Although America’s 235th birthday has now come and gone, the vehicles on the recent list of 2011’s “Most Wanted American Cars,” put together to celebrate the occasion by the automotive experts at Motor Trend , are still setting off fireworks—especially for Ford. After all, fully half of the entries on the list (which only considered American-branded vehicles) were built by the Blue Oval, including: Fiesta —The top choice in the Subcompact category, the Fiesta, was a huge hit, with MT editors writing that: “You know that solid CRACK a baseball makes when it meets an oak bat, sweet spot to sweet spot? The Fiesta does that in two significant areas: styling and build quality. Everywhere we took the Fiesta, eyebrows rose and admiring glances caressed the car. This is clearly a good-looking automobile, a shot glass brimming with European taste.” Focus —In the Compact segment, the winning vehicle was the Focus, which “has vaulted from forgettable to formidable in one fell swoop. The improvements to the new car are night and day compared to what we had, and we’d expect no less from an all-new car. With both sedan and hatchback models available and an impressive-looking electric model on the way (and possibly a wagon as well, if the rumors are true), Ford has planted a very large flag on the compact sedan hill.” Mustang —Ford’s modern-day muscle car actually took home honors in two different classes, with the V6 model earning top ratings as “Coupe under $25,000” and the Boss 302 besting all rivals in the “Coupe over $25,000” group. The former was lauded as “nearly as quick as last year’s V8-powered GT,” while of the latter, MT said it was “hands-down the best Mustang [Ford] has ever produced. Edge —One of the best-selling crossovers in the country was the No. 1 choice in the segment for MT editors, who praised its extensive upgrades for the 2011 model year: “Pick nearly any aspect of the popular mid-sized SUV and the Blue Oval’s engineers probably tweaked, restyled, or replaced it. It looks and sounds like an all-new edition.” Which means that for customers who want the best American automakers have to offer, it looks and sounds like their local Ford dealership is the right place to start.

Ford Edge with New EcoBoost 2.0L Engine Delivers EPA-Rated 30 MPG Highway, Great Performance

  • The popular Ford Edge crossover with EcoBoost® power is EPA-rated at an economical 30 mpg highway and 21 mpg city
  • Ford Edge with EcoBoost is now the 13th Ford model/powertrain combination to deliver an EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg or more
  • EcoBoost, combining smaller engines and turbocharging, is a global Ford engine technology that gives customers the power they want and the fuel efficiency they need
  • EcoBoost vehicles have been successful at attracting new customers to the Blue Oval brand, leading the Ford product portfolio in conquest sales

Dearborn, Mich., Aug. 2, 2011 – The Ford Edge crossover, the latest vehicle to receive the company’s EcoBoost® 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, is now certified by the EPA to deliver 30 mpg highway. This complements the best-in-class Edge V6 fuel economy to give utility customers expanded fuel efficient choices.

“Fuel efficiency is important to our customers,” said Amy Marentic, group marketing manager, Large Cars and Crossovers. “Adding the EcoBoost engine to the new Ford Edge crossover makes for 13 vehicles delivering 30 mpg or more in the Ford showroom.”
The Ford Edge delivers 30 mpg on the highway, besting all SUVs its size or larger, in addition to cars such as the Honda Civic Si and the Saab 9-3 automatic. The only competitive utilities offering higher highway fuel economy than Edge with EcoBoost are a few smaller-size vehicles such as the Ford Escape Hybrid.
Combining gasoline direct injection and turbocharging with smaller overall displacement, this advanced new EcoBoost engine delivers the power of a normally aspirated V6, yet delivers four-cylinder fuel efficiency.
EcoBoost has been successful at attracting new, more upscale customers to the Ford showroom. Taurus SHO and Flex with EcoBoost lead the Ford lineup for car and utility conquesting. More than half of all Taurus SHO buyers are new to the Ford brand, and more than 62 percent of Flex with EcoBoost buyers had not previously considered a Ford product.
With popular F-150 pickup trucks now offering an EcoBoost option, sales of Ford vehicles with this advanced technology have crested 70,000 units and the F-150 EcoBoost now accounts for 41 percent of total F-150 sales, making it the top-selling full-sized V6 pickup truck on the market.
EcoBoost is a global Ford engine to provide affordable fuel efficiency for millions of drivers, while delivering the power they desire. By the end of 2011, Ford will have built nearly 180,000 EcoBoost-powered vehicles in North America. EcoBoost will be offered in 90 percent of Ford vehicles by 2013. Ford holds more than 125 patents on its EcoBoost engine technology.
13 at 30 or more
Adding a fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine to the popular Edge crossover means the Ford showroom now offers customers a choice among 13 model/powertrain variations that deliver an EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg or more.
These Ford offerings are listed here with their respective city/highway EPA-rated fuel economy estimates:
  • Edge with EcoBoost: 21 mpg/30 mpg
  • Escape Hybrid FWD: 34 mpg/31 mpg
  • Escape Hybrid AWD: 30 mpg/27 mpg
  • Fiesta five-speed manual: 29 mpg/37 mpg
  • Fiesta automatic: 29 mpg/38 mpg
  • Fiesta SFE automatic: 29 mpg/40 mpg
  • Focus five-speed manual: 26 mpg/36 mpg
  • Focus automatic: 28 mpg/38 mpg
  • Focus SFE automatic: 28 mpg/40 mpg
  • Fusion 2.5-liter automatic: 23 mpg/33 mpg
  • Fusion Hybrid: 41 mpg/36 mpg
  • Mustang 3.7-liter Coupe automatic: 19 mpg/31 mpg
  • Mustang 3.7-liter Convertible automatic: 19 mpg/30 mpg
Edge fuel-saving technologies
Building on Edge V6 best-in-class highway fuel economy, the EcoBoost powertrain makes Edge an even more economical proposition.
This advanced EcoBoost four-cylinder engine provides the optimum balance between fuel efficiency and responsive power, delivering 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a generous 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm. Edge with EcoBoost delivers comparable fuel economy to Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, yet offers utility shoppers a responsive choice as Edge provides a 58 horsepower advantage over these compact General Motors offerings.
The Edge with EcoBoost combination of superior fuel efficiency and ample responsiveness is enabled by direct gasoline injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).
Efficiency is further enhanced through employment of low-friction 5W-GF5 motor oil, a variable-displacement air conditioning compressor and a unique 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission optimized for fuel efficiency through employment of active transmission warm-up to help reduce internal friction as the powertrain approaches normal operating temperature.
Edge with EcoBoost also introduces category-exclusive active grille shutters. These variable grille slats close as vehicle speed increases to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

Production location

The 2012 Edge with EcoBoost is produced at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada.

Virtual Ford Focus Helps Garner Real-World Sales

Gamers who enjoy The Sims 3 —the world’s most popular life-simulating video game—can now enjoy “driving” one of the country’s most popular small cars—the all-new 2012 Ford Focus . That’s because Ford is now offering a unique Focus Neon Nights download package for the game that includes a Focus sedan, two “Ford” t-shirts (one for men, one for women), a high-end sound system and a set of eye-catching neon lights that can be integrated into The Sims’ virtual world. But it’s just the latest effort in Ford successful and ongoing relationship with the popular video game Ford also had offered the previous-generation Focus to players of the previous generation of The Sims, along with products like the Ford Escape Hybrid, Ford Fusion, Ford Edge and Ford Mustang GT. Further, the Ford Fiesta was added to The Sims 3 earlier this year. All told, Sims players have downloaded more than 8 million Ford vehicles. So why focus on the Focus now? “Self-expression is a key personality trait of Sims players; a car like the new Focus that has a lot of personality is perfectly in sync with what resonates,” said Steve Seabolt, vice president, Global Brand Partnerships at Electronic Arts. “Our involvement with The Sims 3 demonstrates how Ford is looking for alternate ways to talk to the consumer outside of print, television and radio,” added Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “Gaming is a key area we are focusing on and The Sims has proved it can be an effective channel.” As for exactly how effective it’s been, consider that the company behind the game, Electronic Arts, has sold more than 145 million copies of The Sims since its inception and reports that some 28 percent of current players drive a Ford in real life. And with Ford now offering a slew of high-quality, high-efficiency products like the Focus and Fiesta—again, in the real world—that number is virtually certain to increase.

Ford: Fusion Hybrid May Be The Highest Quality Hybrid

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is America’s most fuel-efficient sedan and it may be among the highest-quality hybrids available. According to Ford, Fusion Hybrid customers are the most satisfied hybrid owners. Ford’s hybrid taxi fleet has logged more than 80 million miles in California alone during the past decade — which is far greater than the number of miles logged by the Toyota Prius, according to Ford. Yet only a few issues have ever been documented among these high-mileage, extreme-usage hybrid taxis. Their performance is quite simply a testament to the model’s quality and reliability. “Ford’s battery technology is so strong, the odds of experiencing an issue with one of our hybrid battery cells is around 8.5 million to 1 – about the same odds as a person being struck by lightning twice,” said Chuck Gray, chief engineer, Global Core Engineering, Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. “Ford understands that for new technology, reliability can be a concern for customers, so we work extra hard to deliver a trouble-free product.” Not only are taxi fleets enjoying the Fusion hybrid’s reliability, but so are average consumers. The Fusion Hybrid is delivering a 75 percent conquest rate, bringing more new buyers to the brand than any other Ford vehicle. As Ford brings new electrified vehicles into the lineup, consumers can rest assured that the Blue Oval’s batteries — which Ford has been developing and testing since the 1980s — will continue to deliver durability and longevity. “Our customers have put hundreds of millions of miles on our hybrids with virtually no powertrain issues, which is a testament to the quality of our batteries,” Gray said. “We have checked the battery life simulations with test data and with real-world customer vehicle data, and now we’re applying that knowledge to make the customer experience in our future products even better.”
