Ford Raises $400,000 For Charity With “Blue Angels” Mustang

A one-of-a-kind “Blue Angels” edition 2012 Ford Mustang GT sold for $400,000 at the Gathering of Eagles charity auction late last week. The proceeds will benefit the EAA Young Eagles organization, which has provided free introductory flights to more than 1.6 million young people since 1992 while also teaching the value of hard work, personal responsibility and enhanced math and science skills. The “Blue Angels” edition joins three other one-of-a-kind Mustangs created by the Ford design and engineering teams for the EAA Young Eagles Auction in recent years. This year’s Mustang was inspired by the precision, discipline and excitement that define the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels flight team . “With this year’s beautiful ‘Blue Angels’ edition Mustang GT, we’ve captured those qualities and paired them with the innovation Ford design and engineering team members build into all of our vehicles,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of Ford’s board of directors. “Through this project, we take great pride in continuing our support for EAA and the Young Eagles organization.” The “Blue Angels” Mustang is powered by a Ford Racing supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 624 horsepower. The Ford Racing components found within this special edition also include a handling pack, performance exhaust and racetrack brakes. “Ford is a longtime supporter of EAA and our mission to showcase the finest innovation and technology in flight,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “The high interest among aviators in the US Navy and the ‘Blue Angels’ Mustang team made this a very sought-after item, ensuring EAA’s ability to do some amazing things for our future aviation enthusiasts.”

Virtual Ford Focus Helps Garner Real-World Sales

Gamers who enjoy The Sims 3 —the world’s most popular life-simulating video game—can now enjoy “driving” one of the country’s most popular small cars—the all-new 2012 Ford Focus . That’s because Ford is now offering a unique Focus Neon Nights download package for the game that includes a Focus sedan, two “Ford” t-shirts (one for men, one for women), a high-end sound system and a set of eye-catching neon lights that can be integrated into The Sims’ virtual world. But it’s just the latest effort in Ford successful and ongoing relationship with the popular video game Ford also had offered the previous-generation Focus to players of the previous generation of The Sims, along with products like the Ford Escape Hybrid, Ford Fusion, Ford Edge and Ford Mustang GT. Further, the Ford Fiesta was added to The Sims 3 earlier this year. All told, Sims players have downloaded more than 8 million Ford vehicles. So why focus on the Focus now? “Self-expression is a key personality trait of Sims players; a car like the new Focus that has a lot of personality is perfectly in sync with what resonates,” said Steve Seabolt, vice president, Global Brand Partnerships at Electronic Arts. “Our involvement with The Sims 3 demonstrates how Ford is looking for alternate ways to talk to the consumer outside of print, television and radio,” added Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “Gaming is a key area we are focusing on and The Sims has proved it can be an effective channel.” As for exactly how effective it’s been, consider that the company behind the game, Electronic Arts, has sold more than 145 million copies of The Sims since its inception and reports that some 28 percent of current players drive a Ford in real life. And with Ford now offering a slew of high-quality, high-efficiency products like the Focus and Fiesta—again, in the real world—that number is virtually certain to increase.

New Shelby GTS: Affordable Shelby Performance For Today’s Ford Mustang

Gearheads today know that seeing the iconic “Shelby” name on hi-po Fords like the Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 guarantees some serious upgrades have been added to the Mustang mix. But at the same time, they also know the cars’ MSRPs have been seriously upgraded to match. Which is where the all-new Shelby GTS comes into play, building on the success of the previous Shelby GT . “The Ford Shelby GT was introduced in 2007 as an agile, reliable and affordable muscle car,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American Inc. “It dominated its SCCA racing class and was a popular canvas for enthusiasts to create their dream Shelby. Our Shelby GTS picks up that mantle and expands upon it with a choice of V6 or V8 power for a new generation of Shelby enthusiasts who want a car built just for them.” The Shelby GTS package can be added to either the current Mustang V6 or V8-powered Mustang GT, with naturally aspirated or supercharged engines, and it delivers: A Ford Racing handling pack, with new springs, tuned stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace A “fresh-air” package for naturally aspirated powerplants A Borla exhaust system Shelby/Baer brakes A unique, deep-draw hood showcasing a classic Shelby design A black billet upper grille with the Ford “Running Pony” emblem Unique Shelby front fascias Shelby LeMans stripes and side stripes “Shelby GTS” badging and official Shelby CSM interior plate “Powered by Ford” side badges “Shelby” lettering on the rear deck lid The price for all this Shelby goodness? A mere $9,995, not including the price of the base car. A wide range of Shelby options are available, too, including Shelby superchargers for both V8 and V6 models, upgraded six-piston Shelby/Baer brakes, adjustable control arms, a number of wheel/tire packages, a Watts-link rear suspension and two-tone leather interior. “Our Shelby GTS is a fantastic way to pump up the capabilities of a stock Mustang within a budget without sacrificing performance,” added Luft. “It’s a car that reaches a younger buyer while acknowledging the economic realities of our times.” For more information, please visit ShelbyAmerican.com .

First 2012 Boss 302 Earns $450K For Charity

People like to toss around numbers when they talk about muscle cars, so here are a few to keep in mind when you see the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca: 440 hp, 380 lb-ft of torque—and $450,000. That last one? It was the winning bid for the very first of these track-ready creatures to come off the assembly line, as recorded at the recent Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. (Proceeds from the sale went to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.) And although the Barrett-Jackson car has already found a new home, it was just the first of a limited run of units that will be available to the public this year, all offering the same comprehensive approach to high performance. “The team at Ford wanted to offer their fellow Mustang enthusiasts something really special—a beautifully balanced factory-built race car that they could drive on the street,” explains Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “The Boss 302 isn’t something a Mustang GT owner can buy all the parts for out of a catalog or that a tuner can get by adding a chip. This is a front-to-back re-engineered Mustang with every system designed to make a good driver great and a great driver even better.” That means Ford stripped out the boring stuff and packed in the 5.0-liter V8 from the Mustang GT —boasting a new intake, revised cams and more aggressive control calibration—along with other go-fast goodies like a race-inspired clutch with upgraded friction materials, close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, 3.73 ratio rear axle, an aero packaged derived from that on the Ford Racing Boss 302R and a limited-slip differential equipped with ceramic-fiber plates. Recaros and a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip diff are options. Adrenaline surges come standard. “Boss is a hallowed word around here, and we couldn’t put that name on a new Mustang until we were sure everything was in place to make this car a worthy successor,” added Pericak “We were either going to do it right or not do it at all.”
