Ford Focus Is World’s Best-Selling Car

According to the most recent reports from the Ford Motor Co., the Ford Focus is the best-selling car in the world. The reports show 489,616 units being sold in the first half of the year, beating out the second place car by 27,000 units. There is still another half of the year to be reported on, so it’s not a certain title…yet.

Ford was able to accomplish this feat by revamping the Focus and making it superior to all other cars in it’s class, including the Corolla. They are now selling the Focus in over 100 countries throughout the world, raising sales by 31% for the first six months of 2012 over the same time in 2011.

The new Ford Focus comes in several trims and even has an electric version. The base model starts at $16,200 and has an EPA certified rating of 36 MPG on the highway. The Focus Electric is rated at 110 MPG equivalent for city driving.

Ford Surpasses EcoBoost Goal

Ford’s EcoBoost are a revelation in the automotive industry.  An industry that has no mercy on auto manufacturers who cannot come with unique and innovative technology year after year.  With the EcoBoost engine, Ford has not only created a vehicle with superb fuel-efficiency and lower emission ratings, they’ve also delivered on the performance Ford consumers expect.

To help with these numbers are the two most recent additions to the EcoBoost family.  The first is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine made for the Taurus, and the other is a 1.0 liter 3-cylinger engine which we will see in the Focus or Fiesta beginning next year.  By the year 2013, Ford will deliver over 1 and a half million turbocharged EcoBoost engines.  This amount surpasses their goal by 100,000 units, thrilling them beyond compare.

Another big change for Ford is the fact that they are consolidating the vehicle platforms from 22 separate ones, to only 10, making desirable changes to each family by the year 2017.

Ford Decides on Focus RS

Ford had talked about a new generation of the Focus RS, but has stayed mum on whatever decisions are being made.  Before silence about the situation, Ford said they were considering going with a Fiesta RS instead of the Focus RS, until the Focus ST became so wildly popular.  Automotive expert consensus is that Ford should stick with the a Focus RS, but give it a more powerful engine.  One magazine has said Ford is talking about using the 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine that will most likely be used in the 2015 Mustang.

The previous generation of Focus RS was powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine providing 301 horsepower in standard from and up to 345 horsepower in with the limited edition trim.  If the next-gen Focus RS gets the Mustang’s engine, we can expect a horsepower output at around 330 horsepower for the base model.

It seems Ford is playing a wait-and-see game before it decides on which model will get the RS, since either the Focus or Fiesta may yet prove to outdo the other.

Ford Focus in the Final Three for 2012 North American Car of the Year Award

To automotive enthusiasts, The Detroit Auto Show is as exciting as Christmas is to kids.  We get to see the cars of the near and far future, learn about the latest in innovative technology and see things the general public won’t see for years to come.  This auto show, which will begin next week, is also the time we learn which 2012 cars and trucks are the best of the best.

Last month the finalists were announced and in the car category we find the Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen Passat and the Ford Focus.  Ford has had a vehicle in the final three for cars or trucks the past three years running and took the award for best car and best truck in 2010.  In those other years, domestic cars were prevalent among the finalists.  Yet this year, the Ford Focus is the only domestic vehicle among the Car of the Year finalists.

The finalists were selected by a panel of 50 automotive journalists and we wait with bated breath to see who shall bring home the grand prize.

Focus Zetec S

Ford UK is giving Focus buyers a model to tide them over until the Focus ST arrives next year. The Focus Zetec S wears a full sports suspension with stiffer springs and dampers for slightly improved handling, though there’s no word on whether or not the model sits any closer to the ground than its base counterpart. A full aero kit is part of the package, as well, complete with front and rear spoilers and new side skirts. Buyers can also look forward to a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, and inside, the driver is treated to sport pedals.

The Focus Zetec S will be available with four engine options, including a range-topping 177-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. That’s a far cry from the 246 horsepower available in the upcoming Focus ST, though buyers looking for a little style without any of the go may find something to smile about in the Zetec S.
