SAE Says Ford Shelby Has the Most Powerful V8 Engine

According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, the vehicle powered by most powerful V8 in production is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500. The 5.8 liter supercharged engine in the high-performance Mustang is not easily missed with its 662HP and 631 lb ft of torque.

Ford doesn’t want consumers thinking the car is a gas guzzler.  They say the revised front fascia and splitter help manage airflow and make the car more aerodynamic, also helping gas mileage.  This is important when you consider the bigger and badder engine from its predecessor’s 550Hp engine.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its segment and is “the most fuel-efficient car with over 550 horsepower in any segment available in America,” Ford said in a statement. Competitors include the 580-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the 470-hp Dodge Challenger SRT8 392.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 will be built at Ford’s Flat Rock, Mich., facility and goes on sale later this year.  For more information or to be the first to get your hands on one, contact Sound Ford.

Ford’s Tire-Inflation Tips Don’t Leave Anything Up In The Air

The latest news and information from Ford courtesy of Sound Ford!

When it comes to summer travel plans, “Many drivers will be wasting fuel—and money—if their tires are under-inflated,” according to David Rohweder, Ford’s tire and wheel expert. “Properly inflated tires play an essential role in enabling vehicles to achieve their best fuel economy.”

In fact, Ford says that keeping tires correctly inflated can reduce fuel costs by 3 to 4 percent, which adds up quickly with today’s high fuel prices. And properly inflated tires are vital to vehicle safety, too, which is another reason to follow the automaker’s recently released tips on the topic.

It all starts with one notable reminder: Even though today’s vehicles are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Rohweder points out that watching for a warning light can’t replace proper tire maintenance. So Ford recommends checking all of a vehicle’s tires—including the spare—at least once a month, using a digital tire-inflation gauge that is accurate to .5 pounds per square inch (PSI). In addition:

  • Tire pressure should be checked before you start driving. Even if a vehicle has been driven as little as a mile, that can heat up the tires and affect pressure readings.
  • Never bleed air pressure from hot tires; always follow the recommendations in your owner’s guide for proper bleeding procedures.
  • Do not rely on the pressure listed on a tire’s sidewall for a guideline during inflation. Those numbers are for the maximum inflation level, not the recommended level; the proper air pressure guidelines for all tires are listed on a sticker on the vehicle that is usually found on the the driver’s-side door jamb.
  • Keep in mind that air temperature can have a significant impact on tire pressure. On average, every 10 degrees change in temperature—both higher and lower—results in a 1 psi change in tire pressure.

And remember, for more information on taking care of your tires, be sure to check your vehicle’s owner’s guide.

Introducing Mustang Mayhem–V6-Style

The folks at Ford went the expected route in developing a new high-performance package for the 2012 Mustang , relying on a team of expert engineers dedicated to helping customers get the most out of this modern-day muscle car. But when it came time to pick a name for the hi-po upgrade, Ford had a better idea: Reach out to the next generation of enthusiasts using the power of Facebook . Thousands of people responded, and the winning suggestion, as determined by online voting, was the “Mayhem Mustang Package.” “We saw great enthusiasm from fans, with tons of creative, unique names coming in,” said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “The contest was twofold—it let us engage with fans by letting them have a say, and it helped build awareness for the package.” The Mayhem Mustang Package includes: 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration Mustang GT coupe front and rear stabilizer bars Mustang GT front struts and rear shocks/springs Shelby GT500 rear lower control arm Model-specific 19-inch wheels Pirelli performance tires for improved grip Mustang GT front and rear brake calipers with Performance Friction pads Strut tower brace for increased body rigidity Mayhem-only electronic stability control calibration, with a sport mode for performance driving Unique badging And remember, the car still holsters the groundbreaking 3.7-liter V6 engine , capable of 305 hp and 31 mpg on the highway—an unbeatable combination of power and efficiency that’s available only in the Mustang. With the Mayhem model now showcasing a curb weight under 3,500 lbs., the result should be an equally unbeatable driving experience. The 2012 Mustang lineup —including the Mayhem Mustang Package—is set to debut later this year.

New Shelby GTS: Affordable Shelby Performance For Today’s Ford Mustang

Gearheads today know that seeing the iconic “Shelby” name on hi-po Fords like the Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 guarantees some serious upgrades have been added to the Mustang mix. But at the same time, they also know the cars’ MSRPs have been seriously upgraded to match. Which is where the all-new Shelby GTS comes into play, building on the success of the previous Shelby GT . “The Ford Shelby GT was introduced in 2007 as an agile, reliable and affordable muscle car,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American Inc. “It dominated its SCCA racing class and was a popular canvas for enthusiasts to create their dream Shelby. Our Shelby GTS picks up that mantle and expands upon it with a choice of V6 or V8 power for a new generation of Shelby enthusiasts who want a car built just for them.” The Shelby GTS package can be added to either the current Mustang V6 or V8-powered Mustang GT, with naturally aspirated or supercharged engines, and it delivers: A Ford Racing handling pack, with new springs, tuned stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace A “fresh-air” package for naturally aspirated powerplants A Borla exhaust system Shelby/Baer brakes A unique, deep-draw hood showcasing a classic Shelby design A black billet upper grille with the Ford “Running Pony” emblem Unique Shelby front fascias Shelby LeMans stripes and side stripes “Shelby GTS” badging and official Shelby CSM interior plate “Powered by Ford” side badges “Shelby” lettering on the rear deck lid The price for all this Shelby goodness? A mere $9,995, not including the price of the base car. A wide range of Shelby options are available, too, including Shelby superchargers for both V8 and V6 models, upgraded six-piston Shelby/Baer brakes, adjustable control arms, a number of wheel/tire packages, a Watts-link rear suspension and two-tone leather interior. “Our Shelby GTS is a fantastic way to pump up the capabilities of a stock Mustang within a budget without sacrificing performance,” added Luft. “It’s a car that reaches a younger buyer while acknowledging the economic realities of our times.” For more information, please visit ShelbyAmerican.com .

Ford Keeps continues to Improve the Mustang

After Ford’s mass amount of improvements to the Mustang lineup last year, we wouldn’t have been surprised this year to see Ford’s engineers just sit back and watch their winning horse run circles around its competition. As it turns out, though, they’ve been busily creating yet another highly desirable model to join the stable. Take a drive in a new Ford Mustang at Sound Ford in Renton.

For 2012, Ford reintroduces the Mustang Boss 302, a nameplate that recalls the Boss 302 of 1969. Just as before, the new Boss 302 is a track-tuned beast, and it should also be both great to drive and even potentially collectible. Numerous engine enhancements kick output up to 444 horsepower, and the Boss receives a host of other hardware upgrades to handle the extra fury under the hood.

The V6 Premium unlocks a slew of packages and options in addition to those available on the base model. These include: the Pony package and the Mustang Club of America Special Edition (both consist of 18-inch wheels and various exterior styling enhancements); the Comfort Group package (a power passenger seat and heated front seats); and the Electronics package (automatic climate control, HD radio and a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic and other information). Also available are remote ignition, xenon headlamps, a glass roof, a tonneau cover for convertible models and a back-up camera. Take a drive in a new Ford Mustang at Sound Ford in Renton.

Video: Current Mustang Family Hits The Track

The current lineup of Ford Mustangs possesses some of the most powerful and fuel-efficient Pony Cars ever produced. And, for 2011, the Mustang has received engine upgrades that nicely complement the latest ‘Stang’s stellar looks. Recently, our friends over at Inside Line decided to see what the latest Mustangs are really made of. They took the whole family — the V6, GT, Boss 302 Laguna Seca and Shelby GT500 — to the Streets of Willow Springs, a 1.6-mile road course in Rosamond, California to see which model really reigned supreme. We don’t want to spoil the ending, but to see the results of the Mustang head-to-head test, check out the video below. Also feel free to check out the full results Inside Line.
