Five Fords Named Among MT’s “Most Wanted American Cars”

Although America’s 235th birthday has now come and gone, the vehicles on the recent list of 2011’s “Most Wanted American Cars,” put together to celebrate the occasion by the automotive experts at Motor Trend , are still setting off fireworks—especially for Ford. After all, fully half of the entries on the list (which only considered American-branded vehicles) were built by the Blue Oval, including: Fiesta —The top choice in the Subcompact category, the Fiesta, was a huge hit, with MT editors writing that: “You know that solid CRACK a baseball makes when it meets an oak bat, sweet spot to sweet spot? The Fiesta does that in two significant areas: styling and build quality. Everywhere we took the Fiesta, eyebrows rose and admiring glances caressed the car. This is clearly a good-looking automobile, a shot glass brimming with European taste.” Focus —In the Compact segment, the winning vehicle was the Focus, which “has vaulted from forgettable to formidable in one fell swoop. The improvements to the new car are night and day compared to what we had, and we’d expect no less from an all-new car. With both sedan and hatchback models available and an impressive-looking electric model on the way (and possibly a wagon as well, if the rumors are true), Ford has planted a very large flag on the compact sedan hill.” Mustang —Ford’s modern-day muscle car actually took home honors in two different classes, with the V6 model earning top ratings as “Coupe under $25,000” and the Boss 302 besting all rivals in the “Coupe over $25,000” group. The former was lauded as “nearly as quick as last year’s V8-powered GT,” while of the latter, MT said it was “hands-down the best Mustang [Ford] has ever produced. Edge —One of the best-selling crossovers in the country was the No. 1 choice in the segment for MT editors, who praised its extensive upgrades for the 2011 model year: “Pick nearly any aspect of the popular mid-sized SUV and the Blue Oval’s engineers probably tweaked, restyled, or replaced it. It looks and sounds like an all-new edition.” Which means that for customers who want the best American automakers have to offer, it looks and sounds like their local Ford dealership is the right place to start.

Ford Edge With New EcoBoost Delivers 30 MPG

The Ford Edge has long been one of the most fuel-efficient offerings in its class. However, with the all-new 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, the Edge now boasts an EPA-rated 30 mpg highway and 21 mpg city. The new EcoBoost engine will complement the best-in-class Edge V6 fuel economy, giving customers expanded fuel efficient choices. With 30 mpg on the highway, the Edge EcoBoost bests all SUVs its size or larger. Even cars that are far smaller, like the Honda Civic Si and the Saab 9-3 automatic, don’t get 30 mpg highway. Other features that enhance the crossover’s efficiency include variable-displacement air conditioning compressor, a unique six-speed automatic transmission, and category-exclusive active grille shutters to improve aerodynamics. EcoBoost has been successful at attracting new, more upscale customers to Ford showrooms. Taurus SHO and Flex models have long benefitted from the EcoBoost, and now it’s even available on the popular F-150 pickup . With its balance of power and fuel-efficiency, Ford plans to add the EcoBoost to 90 percent of its lineup by 2013. “Fuel efficiency is important to our customers,” said Amy Marentic, group marketing manager, Large Cars and Crossovers. “Adding the EcoBoost engine to the new Ford Edge crossover makes for 13 vehicles delivering 30 mpg or more in the Ford showroom.” Ford models delivering more than 30 mpg now include: Edge with EcoBoost: 21 mpg/30 mpg Escape Hybrid FWD: 34 mpg/31 mpg Escape Hybrid AWD: 30 mpg/27 mpg Fiesta five-speed manual: 29 mpg/37 mpg Fiesta automatic: 29 mpg/38 mpg Fiesta SFE automatic: 29 mpg/40 mpg Focus five-speed manual: 26 mpg/36 mpg Focus automatic: 28 mpg/38 mpg Focus SFE automatic: 28 mpg/40 mpg Fusion 2.5-liter automatic: 23 mpg/33 mpg Fusion Hybrid: 41 mpg/36 mpg Mustang 3.7-liter Coupe automatic: 19 mpg/31 mpg Mustang 3.7-liter Convertible automatic: 19 mpg/30 mpg

Ford Edge With New EcoBoost Delivers 30 MPG

Ford Edge with New EcoBoost 2.0L Engine Delivers EPA-Rated 30 MPG Highway, Great Performance

  • The popular Ford Edge crossover with EcoBoost® power is EPA-rated at an economical 30 mpg highway and 21 mpg city
  • Ford Edge with EcoBoost is now the 13th Ford model/powertrain combination to deliver an EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg or more
  • EcoBoost, combining smaller engines and turbocharging, is a global Ford engine technology that gives customers the power they want and the fuel efficiency they need
  • EcoBoost vehicles have been successful at attracting new customers to the Blue Oval brand, leading the Ford product portfolio in conquest sales

Dearborn, Mich., Aug. 2, 2011 – The Ford Edge crossover, the latest vehicle to receive the company’s EcoBoost® 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, is now certified by the EPA to deliver 30 mpg highway. This complements the best-in-class Edge V6 fuel economy to give utility customers expanded fuel efficient choices.

“Fuel efficiency is important to our customers,” said Amy Marentic, group marketing manager, Large Cars and Crossovers. “Adding the EcoBoost engine to the new Ford Edge crossover makes for 13 vehicles delivering 30 mpg or more in the Ford showroom.”
The Ford Edge delivers 30 mpg on the highway, besting all SUVs its size or larger, in addition to cars such as the Honda Civic Si and the Saab 9-3 automatic. The only competitive utilities offering higher highway fuel economy than Edge with EcoBoost are a few smaller-size vehicles such as the Ford Escape Hybrid.
Combining gasoline direct injection and turbocharging with smaller overall displacement, this advanced new EcoBoost engine delivers the power of a normally aspirated V6, yet delivers four-cylinder fuel efficiency.
EcoBoost has been successful at attracting new, more upscale customers to the Ford showroom. Taurus SHO and Flex with EcoBoost lead the Ford lineup for car and utility conquesting. More than half of all Taurus SHO buyers are new to the Ford brand, and more than 62 percent of Flex with EcoBoost buyers had not previously considered a Ford product.
With popular F-150 pickup trucks now offering an EcoBoost option, sales of Ford vehicles with this advanced technology have crested 70,000 units and the F-150 EcoBoost now accounts for 41 percent of total F-150 sales, making it the top-selling full-sized V6 pickup truck on the market.
EcoBoost is a global Ford engine to provide affordable fuel efficiency for millions of drivers, while delivering the power they desire. By the end of 2011, Ford will have built nearly 180,000 EcoBoost-powered vehicles in North America. EcoBoost will be offered in 90 percent of Ford vehicles by 2013. Ford holds more than 125 patents on its EcoBoost engine technology.
13 at 30 or more
Adding a fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine to the popular Edge crossover means the Ford showroom now offers customers a choice among 13 model/powertrain variations that deliver an EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg or more.
These Ford offerings are listed here with their respective city/highway EPA-rated fuel economy estimates:
  • Edge with EcoBoost: 21 mpg/30 mpg
  • Escape Hybrid FWD: 34 mpg/31 mpg
  • Escape Hybrid AWD: 30 mpg/27 mpg
  • Fiesta five-speed manual: 29 mpg/37 mpg
  • Fiesta automatic: 29 mpg/38 mpg
  • Fiesta SFE automatic: 29 mpg/40 mpg
  • Focus five-speed manual: 26 mpg/36 mpg
  • Focus automatic: 28 mpg/38 mpg
  • Focus SFE automatic: 28 mpg/40 mpg
  • Fusion 2.5-liter automatic: 23 mpg/33 mpg
  • Fusion Hybrid: 41 mpg/36 mpg
  • Mustang 3.7-liter Coupe automatic: 19 mpg/31 mpg
  • Mustang 3.7-liter Convertible automatic: 19 mpg/30 mpg
Edge fuel-saving technologies
Building on Edge V6 best-in-class highway fuel economy, the EcoBoost powertrain makes Edge an even more economical proposition.
This advanced EcoBoost four-cylinder engine provides the optimum balance between fuel efficiency and responsive power, delivering 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a generous 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm. Edge with EcoBoost delivers comparable fuel economy to Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, yet offers utility shoppers a responsive choice as Edge provides a 58 horsepower advantage over these compact General Motors offerings.
The Edge with EcoBoost combination of superior fuel efficiency and ample responsiveness is enabled by direct gasoline injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).
Efficiency is further enhanced through employment of low-friction 5W-GF5 motor oil, a variable-displacement air conditioning compressor and a unique 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission optimized for fuel efficiency through employment of active transmission warm-up to help reduce internal friction as the powertrain approaches normal operating temperature.
Edge with EcoBoost also introduces category-exclusive active grille shutters. These variable grille slats close as vehicle speed increases to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

Production location

The 2012 Edge with EcoBoost is produced at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada.

Family-Friendly Fords Honored By Parents.com

The latest news and information from Ford courtesy of Sound Ford!

Come test drive the Ford Fiesta today at Sound Ford in Renton.

When the experts at Parents.com recently put together their list of the “Best Family Cars of 2011,” they took it seriously, teaming up with one of the country’s top online sources for car-buying information—Edmunds.com—to find only those vehicles that could handle a family with young children, handle their cargo, too, and do it all while fitting into a “tight budget.” And while those requirements narrowed the field considerably, Ford still had three vehicles on the list—no other automaker had more.

The completely redesigned Ford Explorer led the way, earning honors in the Big Car segment for its “modern and quiet” cabin, “crisp” ride and high levels of family friendly standard content, including four power outlets, overhead reading lights in all rows, award-winning inflatable safety belts for rear outboard positions and the SYNC hands-free, voice-activated connectivity and entertainment system. And the fact the Explorer offers the highest highway fuel-economy rating in its class—25 mpg—doesn’t hurt either.

The all-new Ford Fiesta garnered kudos in the Budget segment, with Parents.com noting the car can be kitted out with up-level features like SYNC, push-button start, ambient lighting and more, and still boast a price tag of about $16,000. Ford’s compact is surprisingly roomy and stable on the highway, too, and it delivers hybrid-like EPA ratings of up to 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway/33 mpg combined.

Among the Eco-Friendly vehicles, the Ford Fusion Hybrid was called out as a “Best Family Car” for its combination of premium amenities—Parents.com specifically noted the Fusion’s power seats, dual climate controls, backup sensors and two standard power outlets—and standout fuel efficiency: The Fusion Hybrid can achieve EPA ratings of 41 mpg city/36 mpg highway/39 mpg combined, yet drivers can still enjoy “the same fluid feel” that the site says makes the traditional Fusion such “a pleasure to take on long trips.”

So if you’re looking for a family-friendly vehicle with the Parents.com seal of approval, be sure to start with a trip of your own to your local Ford dealership.

Ford Discovers That Americans Actually Like Hatchbacks

Car buyers are looking for versatility as well as fuel economy. That’s while many are steering clear of SUVs and crossovers, and are driving toward hatchbacks and five-door cars. With a fresh assortment of these vehicles, Ford is seeing a steady rise in hatchback popularity in the U.S. Approximately 50 percent of retail sales of the 2011 Ford Fiesta have been for hatchbacks. Additionally, after being on the market for just a few months, 41 percent of sales the all-new 2012 Ford Focus have been for the hatchback. Ford isn’t the only automaker offering more hatchback models. According to Ward’s Auto World data, the total number of hatchbacks available in the U.S. market increased 63 percent between model years 2006 and 2010, going from 291,853 to 475,048. One reason consumers are flocking toward this bodystyle is because today’s hatchbacks offer more cargo space than sedans. In addition to more cargo space, both the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks offer impressive fuel economy and deliver as much as 40 mpg. And, the extra cargo room afforded by the hatchback design makes both models an attractive option over a crossover or SUV. “Our fun, vibrant Fiesta customers like the versatility of the hatchback’s access to cargo both inside and outside the vehicle,” said Sherryl Brightwell, Fiesta brand manager. “The additional square footage allows the on-the-go customer the ability to maximize cargo space when needed.” Ford has successfully made two hatchbacks that are brimming with style and technology. Unsure of how much demand there would be for hatchbacks, Ford prepared itself by investing in flexible plant capacity. This flexibility ensures Ford is able to react quickly to changing tastes, providing a vehicle mix – hatchback or sedan, base model or fully loaded Titanium – to serve varied customer demands. “The hatchback is hitting an unmet need for versatility as people continue to downsize their vehicles,” said Paul Russell, Focus brand manager. “No other competitor in the top-five of total market share offers a hatchback option in the small car segment.”

Ford’s Tire-Inflation Tips Don’t Leave Anything Up In The Air

Check out an electric Ford today at Sound Ford.
The latest news and information from Ford courtesy of Sound Ford!

When it comes to summer travel plans, “Many drivers will be wasting fuel—and money—if their tires are under-inflated,” according to David Rohweder, Ford’s tire and wheel expert. “Properly inflated tires play an essential role in enabling vehicles to achieve their best fuel economy.”

In fact, Ford says that keeping tires correctly inflated can reduce fuel costs by 3 to 4 percent, which adds up quickly with today’s high fuel prices. And properly inflated tires are vital to vehicle safety, too, which is another reason to follow the automaker’s recently released tips on the topic.

It all starts with one notable reminder: Even though today’s vehicles are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Rohweder points out that watching for a warning light can’t replace proper tire maintenance. So Ford recommends checking all of a vehicle’s tires—including the spare—at least once a month, using a digital tire-inflation gauge that is accurate to .5 pounds per square inch (PSI). In addition:

  • Tire pressure should be checked before you start driving. Even if a vehicle has been driven as little as a mile, that can heat up the tires and affect pressure readings.
  • Never bleed air pressure from hot tires; always follow the recommendations in your owner’s guide for proper bleeding procedures.
  • Do not rely on the pressure listed on a tire’s sidewall for a guideline during inflation. Those numbers are for the maximum inflation level, not the recommended level; the proper air pressure guidelines for all tires are listed on a sticker on the vehicle that is usually found on the the driver’s-side door jamb.
  • Keep in mind that air temperature can have a significant impact on tire pressure. On average, every 10 degrees change in temperature—both higher and lower—results in a 1 psi change in tire pressure.

And remember, for more information on taking care of your tires, be sure to check your vehicle’s owner’s guide.

Ford Gets A Better Grip On Fuel-Saving Tire Tech

Ford has long been developing engines, transmissions, and other technologies that help consumers save money at the pump. But these improvements aren’t limited to the powertrain. Ford is also a proponent of specially engineered, low-rolling-resistance tires designed to further improve the fuel economy of its cars and crossovers. All four of Ford’s industry-leading 40-plus-mpg cars – Fiesta SFE, Focus SFE, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid – come fitted with these special, fuel-saving tires. These low-rolling-resistance tires have the ability to improve fuel economy by up to 2 mpg. “Tire technology, pressures and wear can make a big difference to a vehicle’s fuel economy, so Ford is working closely with leading tire companies to optimize performance with low-rolling-resistance tires,” said David Rohweder, global chief engineer for Tire and Wheel Engineering. Ford’s tire team is actively researching new tire compounds and working with suppliers and tire companies to bring more fuel-efficient tires to market faster. Ford is even researching material found in athletic shoes to see if there is potential for automotive application. With Ford’s commitment to delivering more competitive fuel economy with every new product, Ford is also driving innovation. EcoBoost engines and PowerShift transmissions are just part of the equation. The Blue Oval is also committed to improving efficiency without sacrificing performance, capability or driving fun. “Ford is leading the drive for innovation in fuel economy, and one mechanism to do that is through our research program on advanced tire technologies,” said Dr. Cynthia Flanigan, group leader for materials research. “Our goal is to anticipate, innovate and incorporate technologies and materials to make Ford a leader in fuel economy and to help deliver superior low-rolling-resistance tires to customers faster than anyone else.”

Ford Has The Edge In Safety, Efficiency And Sales

The new 2011 Ford Edge is now poised to become a top pick of more customers than ever before, after recently being named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The prestigious honor is awarded only to vehicles that offer electronic stability control—a standard feature on the Edge—and score the highest possible ratings in the IIHS evaluations of front, side, rear and rollover crash-test protection. It’s yet another recognition of Ford’s leadership role in vehicle safety, which also extends to offering Edge owners a wide range of advanced driver-aid and safety technologies, including: Adaptive cruise control—which automatically responds to changing traffic conditions to maintain a preset distance between the Edge and other vehicles Collision warning with brake support—which leverages in-vehicle sensors to help reduce speed, automatically pre-charges brakes and alert the driver if the system detects an imminent collision BLIS with cross-traffic alert—which helps detect vehicles in blind spots during normal driving, and, when reversing out of parking spots, can detect traffic approaching from the sides of the Edge Tire Pressure Monitoring System—which alerts drivers when it senses that tire pressure is low MyKey —which allows parents to limit such things as vehicle speed and audio volume to help encourage safe driving habits in teens The bottom line, according to Eric Peterson, Ford’s crossover marketing manager: “The new Edge delivers features that both help prevent a crash and help minimize occupant injuries when a crash is unavoidable. It’s a comprehensive safety story from bumper to bumper.” Notably, it’s a story that has made its way onto the best-seller list, too. In fact, when you mix the Edge’s safety performance with best-in-class EPA ratings of up to 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined, you get a vehicle that garners more customers than any other mid-size crossover in America. And it’s on sale at local Ford dealerships now.
